Historically, menstruation has been associated with impurity, sin, or even supernatural powers. In ancient times, some cultures believed that menstruating women could spoil crops or cause illness. These myths have persisted throughout history, leading to a deeply ingrained societal discomfort around discussing periods and menstruation openly.
The silence around periods has had significant consequences for women's health and well-being. The stigma associated with menstruation can result in young girls feeling embarrassed or ashamed about their bodies, leading to a lack of knowledge and understanding about their own health. This can contribute to period poverty, where women and girls struggle to afford or access sanitary products. Moreover, it can hinder proper medical care for menstrual-related disorders, such as endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

13 Moons is an “Art in progress” collection of embroidered menstrual blood stains and reflections on healing that enables the community to participate in the creative and introspective process of being present through art, and potentially healing. The context frames a controversial aesthetic that disrupts social codes in relation to menstruation and deep layers of cultural aspects underlying the stains and the conversation that they induce.
This art installation enables communities to be part of this process through the co-creation of an impermanent and interdependent “art in progress” collection that manifests as infinite creative potential. The starting point is a set of 88 stains that represent the collection of blood on the 13 menstrual cycles where healing occurred. These stains are all that is left of the uterine mass.
There are a total of 20 stains already embellished with embroidery, and there are 82 raw stains that will be embroidered while I continue this living art project.
